The Artist/Teacher Institute


Co-sponsored by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts and Arts Horizons  and now in its 35th season, The Artist/Teacher Institute (aTi) provides classroom teachers, administrators, students and artists with in-depth, hands-on experiences in a variety of art forms that encourage professional growth and discovery.  By expanding their creativity, participants learn new skills to integrate arts into their curriculum and professional practice while connecting with a community of peers.  Led by internationally renowned master teaching artists, aTi summer's workshops include book arts, creative movement, music, printmaking, storytelling, theatre, painting, collage, poetry and memoir.

Printmaking        
Instructor Eileen Foti

Learn simple, low-tech printmaking techniques for use with and without a press to create innovative and sophisticated prints. Methods can be used in K-12 classrooms. Explore collagraphy, monotype, embossing, relief methods, and chine colle. Use polyester plate lithography to combine handmade marks with laser printer or copy machine images. Add $8 for material fee.

Memoir                       
Instructor Cat Doty

Learn to write powerful prose about actual experience. Through guided reflection and writing exercises, find the personal stories – whether long-ago or more recent – that you yearn to tell. You’ll learn elements of literary craft including showing vs. telling, sensory detail, structure and voice. 

Oil Painting            
Instructor Kit Sailer

See the world through the eyes of an artist in this workshop designed for all levels to develop skills and unleash creativity.  Learn the basics of color mixing, brush techniques, development of form and composition.  Participants are encouraged to bring in their own reference materials/photos to work from. Add $8 for material fee.

Acting/Improv
Instructor Dominique Cieri

If you want to act or just be a better teacher in front of the class, learn games to help with storytelling and writing through this low-pressure class. This safe, fun, foundational workshop will set your imagination in motion with techniques to help you and your students overcome stage fright and self-consciousness. Discover the applications of comedy of drama in the classroom by learning theatre games, beginning improvisation and script work. 

Paper Engineering
Instructor Scott Furman

Participants will explore the traditional method of constructing basic shapes such as equilateral triangles, hexagons and octagons using a compass and straight edge. They will explore the use of geometric shapes as elements for composition in 2d or 3d work. Pre-cut shapes will be used as building blocks for constructing geometric solids, for creative activities such as collage, or as templates for a variety of artistic mediums. Add $8 for material fee.

The Art of Playing Together
Instructor Hector Morales

This hands-on workshop introduces participants to percussion from around the world while exploring areas of music such as composition, instrument building, ensemble playing, musical traditions, and technology. Through teamwork, participants will increase their knowledge and appreciation of a variety of international musical traditions and cultures.  

Workshops must have a minimum enrollment of 6 students. If enrollment for your workshop is not met, you will be notified 2 weeks prior to the start of your workshop. You can choose another workshop or we will happily refund your registration fee.
